Which format should I use?

JPG is best for photos: small files, no transparency. PNG keeps every pixel and supports transparency, so it suits screenshots, logos and graphics. WebP does both jobs in smaller files and is supported by all current browsers, but some older apps can’t open it.

Your browser does the work

Images are decoded and re-encoded by your browser, so they never leave your device. That also means a few formats depend on the browser: every current browser can create PNG and JPG, while saving WebP works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox but not in Safari. Each tool checks before it runs.

Not supported yet

HEIC (iPhone photos) and TIFF can’t be opened by most browsers, so they aren’t offered. Animated GIF and WebP become a still picture of their first frame.

Questions about image tools

Is image quality reduced?

Converting to PNG keeps every pixel. Converting to JPG or WebP uses the quality you choose; 85–90 is hard to tell apart from the original for photos.

Is photo metadata kept?

No. EXIF data such as camera details and location is not copied to the new file. Photos are turned upright first, using their orientation tag.
