Example
John Smith Jane Doe
Smith, John Doe, Jane
Regular expression (\w+) (\w+) replaced with $2, $1.
Good for
- Renaming a term throughout a document
- Reformatting data with regular expressions
- Removing unwanted words or characters
- Swapping separators, such as commas for tabs
Regular expression tips
Use $1, $2… to insert capture groups and $& for the whole match. Type \n in the replacement for a new line and \t for a tab. ^ and $ match the start and end of each line. Invalid patterns show a friendly error, and slow patterns are stopped automatically so the page never freezes.
What happens to your text
Your text is processed in your browser and kept only in this tab’s memory. It is not uploaded, saved or used for analytics.
Questions about Find & Replace
More answers in the TextVix FAQ.
What does “Whole word” do?
It only matches complete words, so finding “cat” won’t match “catalog” or “bobcat”. It works with accented and non-Latin letters.
Why does my regular expression show an error?
The pattern isn’t valid JavaScript regex syntax — often an unclosed bracket or a trailing backslash. Fix the pattern and the error disappears.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your text and files are never sent to a server or stored.
